3 Facts About Cleanroom Apparel

Gaining and keeping a cleanroom classification begins with understanding disposable cleanroom apparel. This throwaway clothing is the first defensive barrier against particulate release in the controlled environment of a cleanroom. At Medco Supplies, we understand the benefits of disposable clothing in a cleanroom, laboratory or medical facility.

Its Purpose is Twofold

Disposable apparel is designed to protect the employee as well as to reduce contaminants from entering the cleanroom environment. Disposable garments differ from personal protective equipment (PPE) in that they don’t necessarily inhibit germs, chemicals or contaminants from reaching the wearer. That’s the purpose of gloves, masks, respirators and face shields, which are commonly classified as PPE. However, disposable apparel can be chemical resistant and rated well for protecting the wearer from some of the most common hazards. But the primary purpose is to preserve the integrity of the cleanroom or medical room.

The Materials Make the Difference

When buying disposable apparel, you have 3 choices of materials. Each one has a different level of durability, breathability, liquid resistance, chemical barrier and contamination control.

Spunbonded olefin offers excellent durability and particulate protection. However, it is not chemical nor liquid resistant and is not recommended for chemical and gas handling.

Polyethylene-coated polypropylene fabrics provide an excellent liquid barrier. They are often economical for general purpose applications. They offer UV protection and allow moisture to transfer from the inside.

Spunbonded -meltblown – spunbonded (SMS) this specially processed fabric provides an excellent barrier against water-based liquids. Chemical splashes and contaminating particulates are also repelled. Employees like it for its lightweight, breathable qualities. It is also treated with an anti-static wash for ESD sensitive environments.

An Ensemble is Essential

To completely outfit your employees, you will need a quantity of each item stored in their original packaging in a sterile place. Select from any of a number of options including: bouffant cap, shoe covers, frock, coveralls, beard cover, apron, sleeves, isolation gown, mask, hood, surgical caps, hairnet, or shower cap. Since this apparel is disposable, have a system in place for disposing of the contaminated clothing and PPE at the end of the shift.
